Author(s): Goëzman, Louis Valentin [de]
Language(s): French
Publication: n.pl. [Neuchâtel]: [Société Typographique de Neuchâtel], 1771

Notes: Attribution - hitherto unknown STN edition, all copies of which were sent to the author; no record of this title has been found in library catalogues. However, according to Barbier the first volume of an intended four volumes of the 'Tableau de la Monarchie française' was published by Grangé in Paris in 1777 under the title 'Histoire politique du gouvernement françois ou Les quatre âges de la monarchie françoise. Tome premier', which survives. Assuming Barbier is right, it seems probable that the STN edition was reissued under the Grangé imprint. Goëzman spent most of the early 1770s in a legal battle with Beaumarchais after which he was disgraced, and this may explain the long delay before publication. NB. Multiple spellings exist for the surname of this magistrate and later secret agent. In the STN archive his name is usually spelt Götzmann, but this database uses the spelling Goëzman, which is more familiar in the literature and apparently the author's preferred form.
