Notes: Attribution - known edition. N.B. Although this third edition of the 'Encyclopédie', comprising 36 vols of text and 3 of plates, claimed to be published 'A Genève: chez Jean-Léonard Pellet; à Neuchâtel chez la Société typographique', it was in reality, as Robert Darnton has shown, produced on behalf of Joseph Duplain and his associates in several different printshops. According to the STN's 'Banque des ouvriers' for 1776-9 the STN produced volumes 6, 15, 19, 24, and 35. Purchases of paper for these volumes have also been traced by Darnton ('Business of Enlightenment', pp. 190-1). Based on the STN's copy of Duplain's subscription register (BPUN MS 1220), supplemented by other documents, Darnton has reconstructed and mapped the distribution in Europe of Duplain’s 8,011 subscriptions, mostly sold to booksellers (Business of Enlightenment, Appendix B). Our figures do not draw on this source and only account for copies which went through the regular accounts of the STN.

Notes: N.B. Along with the ‘Description des Arts’, the STNs edition of the ‘Encyclopédie’ was a lengthy and complicated undertaking that, largely due to subscription sales, did not always pass through the society’s accounts in the same fashion of ‘normal’ books. The FBTEE project methodology has allowed us to reconstruct many of the sales of the various editions, but data given should be considered incomplete. Because of this, no attempt has been made to give assumed printing runs and dates. For a more complete publishing history see Darnton ‘The Business of Enlightenment’.
