Keyword definition: Works relating to the so-called Petitpierre affair, a religious controversy which rapidly acquired a political dimension in the Neuchâtel of the late 1750s and early 1760s. The affair concerned the minister Ferdinand-Olivier de Petitpierre, who having once denied the eternity of the sufferings of Hell, was stripped of his living at La Chaux de Fonds in 1760 and forced into exile in England from 1762-1774.
